Switzerland is a country of immigration. This means that more people are immigrating than emigrating. Many migrants face discrimination, prejudice and racism. International Migrants’ Day on 18 December focuses on protecting their rights worldwide.
What do we honour on International Migrants’ Day?
On 18 December 1990, the UN General Assembly adopted the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families. The Convention is an international standard with which every country in the world should align its protective laws.
Every year, the International Migrants’ Day draws attention to the reality of life for people with migration experience. This makes it an important day for “ici. here together.” We honour it by talking about living together and cultural diversity.
How does “ici. here together.” promote volunteering?
The Migros Commitment sponsorship programme “ici. here together.” doesn’t just bring people together on International Migrants’ Day. From reading circles and sewing workshops to sports clubs, we promote voluntary work and support integration projects throughout Switzerland. Our goals remain the same 365 days a year:
- We are committed to cultural and linguistic diversity.
- We are open and curious about people with diverse experiences.
- We promote encounters.
- We meet at eye level.
- We are committed to equal opportunities in cooperation.
- We break down prejudices.
For a Switzerland that sticks together.
